Shawna Loyer is a 45-year-old American actress, philanthropist, humanitarian, and an ardent crusader for environmental wellness and health. Her work as an actress might not seem all that popular but she has made some notable movie appearances. She is particularly recognized as the character Dana Newman in the movie Thir13en Ghosts (2001) and its sequel Thir13en Ghosts Revealed (2002).
Shawna Loyer is currently 45 years old
Shawna Loyer was born on October 18, 1979, under the birth sign of Libra, in Miami, Florida, United States. The beautiful thespian is an American citizen on account of her birthplace. Online pictures of the actress show that she has a Caucasian ethnic background even though the actual identity of her parents is unknown. There is also not an available record of what her parents do for a living.
Shawna grew up in Miami, Florida but the actress has not given any indication as to whether she grew up as an only child or if her parents had more children, biological, adopted, or otherwise. Every indication points to the fact that Shawna prefers to keep a low profile because there are no records of her early life save her date of birth and place of birth. Nonetheless, there have been rumors that she is originally from Canada.
The choice to keep a large chunk of her early life a secret means that information regarding Shawna’s formal education is something the public and the media know next to nothing about. However, it would not be too far-fetched to assume that the actress, who is currently 45 years old, went through the basic educational structure of the United States of America, beginning from pre-school, middle school, and high school formal education. With regards to her college education, sources close to the actress have claimed that she did not go to college as she was particularly more focused on pursuing a career in acting.
Shawna Loyer made her screen debut during the early 2000s
Loyer’s ambition to grace the streets and screens of Hollywood was quite apparent to everyone around her while she was growing up and she was quite determined to reach her goal of becoming a Hollywood star. Despite the challenges she faced, the actress managed to eventually achieve her dream.
The first opportunity to fulfill that dream for Shawna came in 2001 when she was cast in the remake of the 1960 horror film Thir13en Ghosts. The movie which was released in 2002 and directed by Steve Beck would become one of only 3 movies that Shawna Loyer was seen in. However, the 2001 film became sort of a calling card for Shawna. She played the role of The Angry Princess, one of the ghosts that were imprisoned in a haunted house by ghost hunter, Cyrus Kriticos.
Before she was known as “The Angry Princess” though, she had lived as a beautiful woman named Dana Newman, who found it difficult to believe it when other people said she was beautiful. Her perceived deficiencies and insecurities led her to attempt to make changes to her appearance through various plastic surgeries, including a clumsily done facial plastic surgery. To add further salt to injury, she was also a woman who found herself on the wrong end of many abusive relationships. Dana Newman ended up taking her own life by slitting her wrists in a bathtub.
She reprised her role of Dana Newman/The Angry Princess, from 13 Ghosts in the sequel, Thir3en Ghosts Revealed, the following year. Shawna would appear in yet another movie/documentary in 2002 titled Ghosts Files: A Haunted House Full of Poltergeist Profiles.
What do the 13 Ghosts represent?
In the course of the movie, viewers are introduced to a spirit liberator named Kalina Oretzia, played by actress Embeth Davidtz. Her first significant act was to assist Arthur Kriticos in freeing his daughter, Kathy, from one of the ghosts named Jackal’s grip. Kalina is also the one who gives the audience a clue of what the 13 Ghosts represent. She begins by telling Arthur that the house was not really a house but a complex machine built by the owner Cyrus, but initially designed by a demon-possessed 15th-century astronomer to open the “Ocularis Infernum” or Eye of Hell when translated to English.
Kalina goes on to tell Arthur that the 12 Ghosts were all a part of the devil’s plan to open the eye of the demonic device and that whoever gets control of the device would be able to see the past, present, and future, essentially controlling time.
What are the 13 Ghosts in Thirteen Ghosts and their stories?
- The First Born Son
The ghost referred to as The First Born Son was a boy named Billy Michaels when he was alive and who was very obsessed with Cowboys and Indians. His very annoying attitude was what led to his death as he ignorantly challenged another boy to a duel. In the movie, he was still seen with the weapon that led to his death, a steel-tipped arrow, lodged in his skull. He appears quite harmless and could always be heard expressing his desire to play.
- The Torso
The Torso is the disembodied frame of a gambler named Jimmy Gambino who was a bookie born during the early 19th century. He was killed by the mafia and cut up in pieces with his body wrapped in cellophane and dumped in the ocean. This unfortunate incident happened as a result of the fact that he lost a bet to the mafia and couldn’t pay. His ghost, the torso wrapped in cellophane with a head somewhere nearby, appears to be harmless as well.
- The Bound Woman
While she was alive, she was a young rich high school girl named Susan LeGrow who was strangled with her boyfriend’s tie. Her boyfriend was the captain of the school football team and he caught her cheating with another guy. In a fit of rage, the said boyfriend brutally murdered both Susan and the young man she was cheating with. Again, the bound woman is scarier than she is actually dangerous.
- The Withered Lover
She is portrayed as Jean Kriticos, Arthur Kriticos’ dead wife who died in a fire accident that the rest of her family survived. She is most definitely not any sort of threat to her husband and 2 kids who had unwittingly and suddenly become prey in their inherited mansion.
- The Torn Prince
Royce Clayton, while he was alive, was a baseball player in the late 1950s. He had died in a fatal accident during a drag race after his brakes were messed with by his opponent. His ghost uses the baseball bat that seems to have become part of his makeup to attack the living characters of the movie.
- The Angry Princess
Born Dana Newman, a vain beauty queen who constantly refused to accept her beauty and repeatedly altered her appearance with plastic surgeries, was always abused in failed abusive relationships until her dissatisfaction with her appearance and life in general, led her to take her own life by cutting her wrists in a bathtub. Dangerous when made fun of as Ben Moss would fatally find out.
- The Pilgrimess
Isabella Smith, as she was called in life, was accused of witchcraft in 1600s New England. A failed execution by burning led her captors to starve her to death. She manifests throughout the movie in the pillory where she died. She’s dangerous as well and was a potent threat to the living characters in the movie.
- The Great Child
The great child was a man named Harold Sherburne who was sick and essentially treated as a child. He and his mother lived in a freak show and were both the butt of every joke by other freaks. After his mom was kidnapped and murdered by other freaks in the carnival one night, he grabbed an ax and killed almost all his enemies before he was caught and killed himself. The circus owner, Jimbo, left instructions for his corpse to be cut up. His ghost was still seen spotting the ax he used to cause the circus massacre, vomit-covered bib, and cloth diapers. Another violent ghost.
- The Dire Mother
A freakishly small lady and Harold’s mother named Margaret Shelburne. She was raped by another freak referred to as the tall man, got pregnant and Harold was the result of the pregnancy. Margaret clearly loved her son but she went above and beyond the call of duty, leading to her son becoming mentally handicapped. As previously mentioned, she was murdered by other members of the circus which in turn led to her son going full psycho on the perpetrators of the heinous crime. Her ghost is constantly seen in the company of her son’s ghost, who acts as a protector. Like the first three ghosts, she is quite harmless.
- The Hammer
In life, the hammer was a really nice man named George Markeley. George was his old Western town’s blacksmith who was falsely accused of stealing by a privileged prick named Nathan. The town’s corrupt officials exiled George and his family but their refusal to leave angered Nathan and his thugs who proceeded to lynch the poor blacksmith’s family. George, being dissatisfied with the corrupt justice system proceeded to take matters into his own hands and summarily kill off everyone involved in the gruesome murder of his family. The reaction of the townsfolk was to chain George to a tree and drive a railroad spike into his midsection, killing him thereby. His ghost was portrayed as still carrying the hammer that helped him deliver justice to his enemies. He is one of the three most powerful and dangerous ghosts in the movie. Angry and violent are the words that best describe his ghost.
- The Jackal
The child of a prostitute, the Jackal is also among the top three volatile ghosts in the movie. He was born in 1887 and named Ryan Khun and years of honing the skill of unpredictability as a human being made his ghost quite dangerous. In life, he was a rapist and a deadly killer. In a bid to find a cure for his compulsive behavior, he checked himself into the Borehamwood medical institute to seek medical attention. Things only got worse for Ryan and he soon went mad. He died in a fire that gutted the asylum where he had made his home.
- The Juggernaut
The juggernaut was practically the alpha ghost. The deadliest, most sinister, and every other conceivable dangerous word you can think of. In life, he was born disfigured and named Horace “Breaker” Mahoney. His nickname is a testament to his actual size. He was cast aside by almost everyone, including his family. His father’s death left him completely unhinged as he summarily turned into a serial killer who picked up hitchhikers before taking them to his junkyard and tearing them apart with his bare hands before proceeding to feed them to his dogs. He was eventually arrested before he was shot and killed after he broke free of the cuffs restraining him and tried to escape.
Who became The 13th Ghost?
The movie is named 13 ghosts but it seems that the producers only made 12 ghosts prominent. At one point viewers thought Arthur would become the 13th Ghost after Kalina attempts to trick him into sacrificing himself to supposedly stop the machine from functioning. However, towards the end of the movie, the 13th ghost is revealed to be Dennis Rafkin, played by Mathew Lillard, the psychic who was murdered by a combination of the hammer and the juggernaut.
The events that followed the malfunctioning of the machine reveal Dennis’ ghost telling Arthur to go to his children before departing the house with the other 12 ghosts.
