Though the duo pretended to be hitting it off initially, it soon came to the fore that they were actually struggling to patch up their relationship.

What is Shannon Price doing now?

Though she had always wanted to become a model and actress, Gary Coleman’s widow Shannon Price had to change direction when her major goal seemed too far from her grasp. Currently, she is engaged at WeWork as its tri-state director of broker relations. Price became part of the company early in 2019. Her work portfolio involves enabling brokers with the needed tools to successfully sell WeWork to their clients. She was in the real estate industry and brought loads of experience to WeWork.

Another version of the story said Price was left destitute after she lost the battle for her deceased husband’s estate and had to move back to her dad’s rented one-bedroom apartment. A correspondent from Inside Edition said her living condition was so disgusting, comparable to an episode from Hoarders. While her dad sleeps on one couch, a second sofa is shared by her three dogs and their bathroom is totally covered in black grime. She even has to beg to shower in a neighbor’s bathroom.

Coleman’s widow who was named Shannon Michelle Price at birth was born on the 28th of August 1985 in the US, though her parents are not known, she has a sister called Shawn Price. Shannon also recorded some acting gigs in Divorce Court, The Gary I Knew, and Entertainment Tonight.

Shannon Price and Gary Coleman met and got married while shooting a movie

Gary Coleman of Different Strokes met Shannon Price who served as an extra while shooting the 2006 film, Church Ball in Utah. Price, then 22, was the one to pop the big question and on her birthday, Gary surprised her; he whisked his love interest off to a hilltop located in the Valley of Fire State Park where they exchange marriage vows. Reports from a US television said it was just the couple, the minister, the photographer, the videographers, and the helicopter pilot at the wedding.

Soon, the difference in their personalities came to bear, fans started speculating how a 22-year-old and 5ft 7inches tall Price would cope with a 40-year-old and 4ft 8in tall Gary. However, Coleman silenced the speculations when he claimed it was love that made him marry Price.

Initially, the duo was adept at downplaying their generational age gap and poles-apart height, dismissing it as unimportant. Claiming he had no issues with age but took intelligence seriously, Coleman said Price was the more intelligent of the two and he was cool with that.

On her own part, Shannon Price described Coleman as being 10 feet tall to her, thanks to his sweet nature, and she really liked his personality. Their nuptial according to her had to be kept secret as she wanted people to see her as her own person. She just wanted her own personality and didn’t want to be perceived as Gary Coleman’s wife. It appeared to be all roses and sweetness at the beginning until the truth started coming out.

The truth about the couple’s short-lived relationship

It soon came to the fore that their relationship was actually volatile. Gary admitted that they could go for a whole week without communicating. Gary claimed he remained a virgin even after being married for months, alleging that their relationship was far from intimate. The Different Strokes actor who already suffered a congenital kidney disorder took a fall in May after their marriage, leading to a brain hemorrhage; rumors alleged that he didn’t fall but was pushed, and accusing fingers were pointed at Price.

Reports say Shannon Price treated her husband badly during their marriage and never accorded him any form of respect or affection She mocked his height, often calling him stupid. At a point, they both appeared on an episode of Divorce Court in 2008, trying to save what was left of their marriage. This obviously didn’t work as Coleman had to get a restraining order against Shannon, shutting her out of his house after their divorce which became official in August 2008. However, Shannon claimed they had a common-law marriage till his demise. When Gary eventually went into the hospital and was placed on life support, it was his wife who gave the order for the life support to be removed and ended his life in 2010, claiming that the actor was already a vegetable.

Price later had to beg fans to assist in paying for Coleman’s burial as their finance was in red.

Battle for Gary’s estate

Going by the obvious, Gary Coleman’s life after Diff’rent Strokes was rather difficult. What with being estranged from his parents and dying at the age of 42, nearly broke, and we are yet to factor in his mockery of marriage with Shannon Price. Colemen confessed that he remain a virgin even after being married and divorced and fans can’t help but ask, what kind of marriage they had.

After his death, deciding on who gets what was left of the former child star’s estate was a huge battle. The ensuing lawsuit pitted Price who claimed she was still married to Gary till his demise against Anna Gray, a close friend of Coleman and former head of his corporation.

Coleman named Gray as executor and beneficiary of his estate in 2005, however, after his nuptials with Shannon Price in 2007, the actor wrote and appended his signature to a codicil favoring his wife. In the will amendment, he emphasized that he was not coerced in any way to sign the document but did so out of his personal selfish interest and weakness. He closed the statement by saying he loved his wife with all his heart.

The language was considered odd but it marked the beginning of the oddities around Coleman’s Estate. According to Utah law, the codicil became ineffective in 2008 after Gary and Price officially divorced and that should have been the end of the case. However, Price filed a lawsuit enforcing the codicil, claiming that they were still married despite being divorced, as common-law husband and wife.

Price explains that their only reason for not getting officially re-married was to avoid publicity.
Considering the fact that common-law marriage is valid in Utah, the case became a difficult one. The law permits couples to be recognized as married if:

  • They cohabit as man and wife
  • Hold themselves out to the public as being married, and
  • Meet certain other requirements

That was exactly the dilemma of the Utah judge in charge of the case who went ahead to hold a trial to determine whether Coleman and Shannon Price were really the lovebirds as claimed by Price who stands to inherit the estate if proved right.

The final ruling

To make this lawsuit battle more interesting, Gary Coleman’s estate had little or nothing left in it – a modest house encumbered in a mortgage, including royalties earned from his days in acting. Surprisingly, the knowledge did not deter Price who said her purpose was solely to get to keep his ashes after she won the case.

As the trial progressed, she continued claiming that their relationship was sexual and loving till Gary’s passing but she didn’t succeed in convincing the Utah judge. The judge drew his conclusion by listening to testimonies from several witnesses who attested to Price’s physical abuse of her husband in public. She was severally spotted leading him in the public by the hand like a child, she never displayed any form of physical affection for Gary and was quick to tell people how they slept in different bedrooms. The final nail in Price’s coffin was the 2010 restraining order granted to Gary to lock her out of his house and the judge was quick to point that out. Besides, we are yet to factor in the fact that Price was enjoying s blatantly open, romantic dalliance with another man during the time she claimed to be actually married to Coleman.

Drawing conclusions from all these glaring facts, the Utah judge dismissed Shannon Price as someone with a significant self-interest and didn’t find her credible. The judge’s final ruling was that there was no marriage which therefore invalidated the handwritten codicil. Needless to say, this paved the road for Coleman’s friend, Gary to go ahead and assume control of, as well as become the sole beneficiary of the deceased’s estate under the 2005 will.
